For its new Chinese headquarters, the industrial vehicle manufacturer Zoomlion commissioned for the building a special facade that actually moves and transforms, its two sets of steel-and-glass wings mounted on hydraulic frames.
The winged design is meant to mimic butterflies and eagles—symbols of fagility and leadership in Chinese culture. When folded down, the shape is meant to resemble a swimming frog, which is china represents prosperity.
The robotic facade was designed using parametric modeling tools, which rely on statistical or proven data and mathematical equations to improve the accuracy of modeling otherwise uncertain or unfamiliar project situations.
