In this week’s releases, Will Smith somehow manages to make a third Men in Black somewhat worthwhile, Paranorman tries to get out of Frankenweenie’s shadow, and nobody likes Stargate: Atlantis season 2 for some reason.
Between the 10 -year delay and the wacky ‘60s setting, I was fully expecting that Men in Black 3 would be atrocious. But thanks to Flight of the Conchord’s Jemaine Clement as the biker villain (pictured above – crazy, right?) and Josh Brolin’s uncanny young Tommy Lee Jones impression, it’s actually not that bad. Go figure.
Comes with a figurine of one of the coffee-drinking worms, but it also comes with Men in Black 2, so it’s kind of a wash.
If you must only purchase one DVD between Frankenweenie, Paranorman and Hotel Transylvania, make sure it’s Paranorman. Also: You should only purchase one DVD between Frankenweenie, Paranorman and Hotel Transylvania.
• Berserk: The Golden Age Arc 1: The Egg of the King
The first of the four-movie anime series absed on Kentari Miura’s incredibly violent fantasy manga takes a bleak look at a king’s breakfast or something.
What, last week’s DVD release wasn’t good enough for you? No? Fine, here’s the goddamned set on Blu-ray. Are you happy now? Because I still feel empty inside.
• Serial Experiments Lain: Complete Series
When a high school student receives an email from a classmate who committed suicide the week before, she realizes the girl has become part of the internet. Given this anime was made in ’98, I imagine she’s staying in a Geocities site.
• Stargate: Atlantis Seasons 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5
Stargate: Atlantis has been available in a complete series Blu-ray set, but now the individual seasons are available separately on Blu-ray for those so inclined. Incidentally, at the time I wrote this, Amazon has the seasons selling from best to worst: 5, 3, 1, 4, 2. That seems weird to me. Would you say that’s an accurate ranking of the show’s seasons, or is something wacky going on?
