Of the 136 fuel-efficient vehicles entered into the 2010 Progressive Insurance Automotive X-Prize, three 100 MPG contenders emerged victorious this week to share in the $10 million prize. These are their names:

The $5 million “Mainstream class” winner was Edison2’s Very Light Car (VLC), seen above. The 830 lb. lightweight achieves 100MPG+ by way of its 40 horsepower motorcycle engine.

The $2.5 million Alternative Class-Tandem class winner was the bright yellow E-Tracer.

Lastly, the Alternative Class winner was the Wave II, a batter-electric hybrid created by Li-Ion Motors. Congrats to all three and the 133 other competitors who competed in this difficult, yet important competition. [Jalopnik, New York Times]
