The rich are taking desperate measures to keep themselves wet during California’s drought: keeping usage data hidden, wasting water in defiance, and even buying extra water to keep their acreage verdant. But stealing water directly from the city? Who would go so low? Tom Selleck, according to a complaint filed against the actor this week.

The LA Timesreports that a truck has been seen filling up at a hydrant then bringing the water to Selleck’s 60-acre ranch in Westlake Village. Whoever was stealing the water was conniving enough to take it from another municipality one city over, Thousand Oaks.

But here’s the craziest part: This was not just a one-time thing. It has happened more than a dozen times since 2013, according to the Calleguas Municipal Water District.

Wait, how could the Calleguas Municipal Water District possibly have known all this?

To document the alleged theft, the water district spent nearly $22,000 to hire a private investigator, according to the complaint.

Not sure why it took three years and $22,000 to gather enough data to file the complaint. They should have hired Magnum. [LA Times]

Update: We have some exclusive images of Tom Selleck’s estate. This is very disturbing in light of the drought.
