UK Firm to Add Music Downloads to DAB Radio

Reading time 1 minute

Reuters brings word of a plan by British digital radio firm UBC to add downloading capabilities to digital radio receivers (like the BUG, pictured) — something that, it a sense, they can already do. While many of the current crop of digital radios can record the audio being digitally broadcasted (either through an on-board interface or old-fashioned analog out), UBC’s plan is to offer a push-button option to download a copy of the song being played free of DJ yammering and other station cruft.

Although most of the details — like which DRM system to use — are still being figured out, it does provide an interesting option for fair use (in the lowercase sense, considering we’re talking about the UK). Offer a free, if rough, version for those willing to make their own copy, or charge a fee for a perfect quality, if rights-restricted, version for audio players or archiving.
