Vampire Academy movies won’t be dumbed down, and Rose won’t be a guy

If you’re worried that the Vampire Academy movies will be dumbed down — or that the kick-ass main character, Rose, will get turned into a guy to appeal to mainstream audiences — you shouldn’t fret, an inside source tells io9.

According to a source close to the production, the plan for the Vampire Academy movies is to stick pretty close to Richelle Mead’s bestselling books. The source adds:

We intend to stick close to the books. They are shorter than the Twilight ones, which will make them easier to adapt.

And yes, the books have a lot of complicated backstory, what with the history of the Moroi and the Dhampirs and their soulless enemies, the Strigoi. (Just explaining the “blood whore” thing could be a challenge.) But dealing with all of the backstory is a workable challenge, the source tells io9.

As for whether the books will be dumbed down — or Rose turned into a boy, as some io9 commenters feared — there’s no chance of that happening.

Right now, the producers are just shopping the project around to studios, with a bunch of meetings happening this week. Once they have a studio on board, they’ll find a writer. So fingers crossed this project gets off the ground soon — we really do need some vampire movies with stronger heroines.
