Looks like Paul Allen’s Vulcan, Inc. has selected Transmeta to provide a 1GHz Efficeon processor to power FlipStart, the PDA-sized palmtop PC expected late this year. While it isn’t a huge surprise, little things like actually having a processor selected will help with the whole actually shipping a product thing, which is nice. The FlipStart is currently slated to include 256MB RAM, a 30GB hard drive, and a 1024 by 600 5.6-inch screen. It tickles me how revolutionary devices like this seem, yet Japanese companies have been building similarly-sized notebooks for years (powered by Transmeta, no less).

Update: The admin from FlipStart HQ took me to task for not paying enough attention to the press release, and hey, well, fair enough:
First, there was never any question about what processor the FlipStart would be equipped with, the Transmeta TM5800 has been listed as the cpu for many months. The _news_ is that the motherboard has been reworked to allow for Efficeon upgradability in the future, and the other dissapointing newsbit is that the product has been pushed back to January, and no longer the Q4 date that was being publicized.
From now on I’m just going to write something really asinine, then wait for you guys to correct me. (Thanks, Captain.)
