So on the one hand, this Smurfs movie is all animation, so we’ve been saved from having to look at Hank Azaria as Gargamel. That was a make up and costume job that I remember every so often, and it causes me to shudder violently. Like a ghost put his hand on my shoulder and whispered, “Hey, remember Hank Azaria in Smurfs?” into my ear.
On the other hand, this trailer contains a) a pun on “shade,” b) a wooden Segway, and c) makes a big point of how every Smurf, save Smurfette, is a “dude.” That means the Lost Village is all women, doesn’t? IS THIS A MOVIE ABOUT A BUNCH OF SMURFS TRYING TO FIND A PLACE TO GET LAID?
