A spiked metal ball attached to a length of chain? A curved dagger designed especially to stab around an opponent's shield? See them both, plus many more, in full combat action in the 6-part original television event known as Spartacus: Gods of the Arena that is premiering tomorrow night on Starz.
Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, the prequel to Spartacus: Blood and Sand, brings the epic brutality of the Roman Empire in the form of realistic prop weapons that are replicas of those that were favored by Roman gladiators. Stars John Hannah (Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Mummy), Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess), Dustin Clare (The Eye of the Storm, Satisfaction), Peter Mensah (300), and Jamie Murray (Botched, The Deaths of Ian Stone) wrap their hands around such death-causing implements as the sica, the murmillo gladius, the hoplomachus daggar, and the flail.
Set years prior to the events of Spartacus: Blood and Sand, a young Batiatus (Hannah) is poised to overthrow his father and take control, and he'll freely betray anyone to ensure his gladiators are in the highest demand. With his loyal and calculating wife Lucretia (Lawless) by his side for every underhanded scheme, and drawing on the brazen talents of her seductive friend Gaia (Murray) when it counts, he will stop at nothing to deceive the masses, seize power, and bleed Capua dry.
Let the games begin—in the arena and in the bedroom. Spartacus: Gods of the Arena premiers tomorrow, January 21, at 10pm ET/PT only on Starz. Check out some behind-the-scenes weaponry demos below, and click here for all things gladiatorial to tide you over until tomorrow night!
