WorldGate introduced Ojo Shadow ($399), a lower-priced version of its original Ojo personal video phone that offers the same 30fps video performance as its more-expensive brandmate, but lacks its 2.4GHz wireless handset. These phones work over a DSL or cable broadband connection, and can operate with as little as 110Kbps of bandwidth.
Apparently the company decided that the $499 price of admission for that original Ojo was a bit steep for this market because it’s also offering a $150 rebate for either phone if you go for a service activation. So for around $250, you can get into the picturephone game. First, you might want to find somebody else who has one, too.
WorldGate told Gizmodo it wasn’t sure when the new phone would be available, but the release date would depend on how quickly it could be shipped from Taiwan.
