Even if Scary Movie—really Scary Movie 6, in the grand tradition of confusingly titled horror reboots—wasn’t a cinematic masterpiece, it was certainly a crowd pleaser. It scored a franchise-best opening weekend, proving fans were still eager to see pop culture skewered on the big screen over a decade after the fifth Scary Movie was released.
Scary Movie 6 also had special resonance because it brought back the family team that created the series back in 2000, including co-stars and co-writers Shawn and Marlon Wayans. Keenen Ivory Wayans and Craig Wayans are also among the movie’s co-writers, along with Rick Alvarez; Michael Tiddes (A Haunted House) directs.
The cast, of course, also includes series mainstays Anna Faris and Regina Hall, as well as the returning Dave Sheridan, Lochlyn Munro, Cheri Oteri, and Chris Elliott. Along for the ride are Kenan Thompson, Kim Wayans, Damon Wayans Jr., Heidi Gardner, Olivia Rose Keegan, Cameron Scott Roberts, Savannah Lee Nassif, Sydney Park, Gregg Wayans, Benny Zielke, and Ruby Snowber.
“The Core Four are back in the killer’s crosshairs, and no horror movie IP is safe when the team reunites to slash through reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror, origin stories, anything with the word legacy in it, and every ‘final chapter’ that absolutely isn’t final,” reads the official synopsis. “Nothing is sacred, no trope survives, and every line gets crossed.”
If Scary Movie didn’t get you to the theater, your chance to stream it on Paramount+ arrives September 3. After all, isn’t this the kind of movie ideally viewed from the comfort of your couch, maybe with your bestie Ghostface sitting beside you?
