Bedside lamps have one job at 3 a.m.: come on without making you hunt for a switch in the dark. Govee’s latest table lamp answers to a pat of the hand, and does a good deal more during waking hours, at a price that is lower than usual during Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days event, where Prime members can get the Govee RGBIC Smart Table Lamp 2 for $53 instead of $79 (-33%).

Pat to Wake, 64 Scenes and Matter Support

Govee calls the feature Pat-to-Wake: One pat on the lamp turns it on, which is easier than finding a small button with your eyes half closed. Two conditions apply and the listing is upfront about them: a setting called Bedtime Switch has to be enabled in the app first, and the pat only switches the lamp on. Turning it off again goes through the touch controls, the app or your voice.

As a light source, the lamp reaches 500 lumens, which Govee says is brighter than its previous models, and its white light adjusts from a warm 2700K to a cool 6500K. In practice that means a soft amber glow for reading before sleep and a crisp white for a desk during the day. Five hundred lumens will not light a whole room, but it is plenty for a nightstand, a shelf or the corner of a living room where a ceiling light feels harsh. The RGBIC part of the name refers to its ability to show several colors at once along the body of the lamp, where ordinary color bulbs display one at a time.

Presets are where Govee tends to go overboard, and this lamp is no exception: more than 64 scenes and 8 modes that pulse along with music. Most people will settle on three or four favorites, I suspect, and that is fine. For the curious, the app also allows custom effects built from scratch, and an AI assistant can generate one from a spoken request, a typed description or a photo. Children will have a field day with it, which may or may not be an argument for putting it in their bedroom.

Compatibility is broad for a lamp at this pric:. It works with Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings, and Matter support brings it into Apple’s HomeKit as well, so it can be included in a “good night” routine with the rest of the house whatever system you use. Timers and schedules are built in, for a light that comes on before the alarm or shuts off after you have fallen asleep. One point to note before ordering: the lamp is corded and has no battery so it needs an outlet within reach of the nightstand.
