Exhaust Grill Cooks Burgers with Smoke Heat

If one crazy grill design wasn't enough today, then check out this Exhaust Burger grill concept. A short-listed entrant in a recent design competition titled "Dining in 2015," the grill, invented by an Iranian team, plugs directly into your car exhaust. It soaks up spare heat in the gases to do the cooking, and the clamshell design keeps those noxious fumes away from your food. Check out the extra image to see how it might let you "cook while you commute."

  • So what kind of damage can that do to another car at 75Mph when it falls out of your tailpipe? ^^

  • I would have thought that it would be more efficient to run the smoke path below the cooking area...

  • As someone who used to cook hot pockets on the manifold of my Jeep while we were out 4-wheelin', I can appreciate not wanting to waste engine heat...

I'm willing to bet some engineer types will get here in a minute and berate it on flow, which could actually lead to less efficiency in the engine...

  • I haven't seen this product yet, but I know a person that cooks while he commutes. (not homer simpson)

He takes veggies, meats, and juices, wraps it all up in tin foil, and leaves it sitting on top of his engine block. 45 minutes driving home, and when you get there, you have an awesome stir-fry style meal.

It works great, recycles energy, and it is also awesome for road trips. In fact, I think there's an instructable about this idea. (no funky exhaust hanger needed)

  • Roadkill burgers anyone?

  • The engine block idea is much better than this, for all the reasons already listed. It is kinda cute though.

  • It'll only add to the oil dependence. Speaking of that maybe they should add something to "filter" car oil to fry that burger and answer the "do you want that with fries?" eternal question.

  • "We're not going to fall for the burger in the tail pipe."

  • Hmmph, and to think we Americans take all the crap for being overweight, burger-eating buffoons. You see, we're not the only fat bodies occupying more space than natural. Why don't Europeans start cutting us some slack and criticize the Iranians for a change?? Maybe that way Dubya will stop try to convince us that they need to be attacked.

  • I'm more impressed with the advertising tag line. "Take it easy!" I just find it so irrelevant to cooking burgers with "smoke heat" while driving.

I smell something funny here and it isn't someone sticking meat up their tailpipe.

    mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......unleaded-y.

  • I'm not sure I should be impressed, be afraid, be myself....

Meanwhile, we mourn all the depressed superstars in Hollywood. Sucks to be hot and famous. And rich.

Question of the day: Why can't people who have decided to kill themselves do ONE unselfish thing during the process and take out someone truly evil (eg. local gang members, drug dealers, pedophiles, politicians) prior to offing themselves. I'm sure a little research would yield up some appropriate names. Heck, it could end up giving them a reason to live after all (up until the point they got executed in Texas for being a vigilante murderer, but at least they'd have tons of supporters).

  • We're cooking with gas now folks!

  • My main problem with the design is, wouldn't the hot cooked burger drop on to the pavement when you open the griller up? Talk about a disappointing moment.

  • Big deal. i can cook an entire turkey in my '92 civic's coffee can muffler...

  • @OENOPHILE: I carry around one of those Ice + Heat grill cooler combos and cook up some nice burgers and stuff in the middle of the trail. I thought about opening up a stand one time after a couple of guys not in my group lingered around checking the trail map a little too long. I assumed they were hoping that we had extra burgers.

@banmojo: Sir, excuse me. Are you lost? Let me help. Just head to the bottom of the page. There - see those words? Specifically Defamer, Gawker, io9, and Jezebel (although ironically not Deadspin). I think that's what you're looking for. Any of them will do. Really. They are all talking about what you want to talk about. Every one of them!

As for the grill? Anything that leads to an overall increase in grilled meat is a plus for me, no matter how one chooses to prepare it.

  • This may be a great idea for a bio-diesel car, you could just drain it into the tank...oh right, fuckin hippies don't eat burgers

  • Bratwurst version coming soon?

  • Any word if these'll work with hybrid engines? or does it just warm it slightly so the e.coli can propogate?

  • @LoganSix: I know a guy with a propane powered Toyota (22R) who has a tap for a gas grill built into the tailgate (yeah, built in) --- he, too has seen his fair share of lingerers...haha

Living in a major metro area, I can see something like this being a big hit in the bro/bachelor sector. There's a ton of guys who get in their cars and sit in beltway traffic for about 2 hours every evening, it'd be nice to get a tasty burger at the end for your troubles!

  • You'de think coming from the Iranian team, they'd use an old centrifuge or reactor or something. I wonder how many rads it takes to cook a burger...

  • Alton Brown did something similar on his "Feasting on Asphalt" show where he made beef stew by wrapping up the ingredients in foil and attaching them to his motorcycle engine. After a few hours on the road the stew was beautifully slow-cooked and tender.

  • So how many BPG (Burgers Per Gallon) do you get?

This was already done years ago on "WINGS" when Roy Biggins and Antonio Scarpacci created the Car-B-Que to cook food using the run off heat from the car on the way to and from work_

  • Turtle Shell!!

  • I actually don't feel guilty when downloading anything. They make enough money with a movie or a disc to buy themselves one more house. They are freaking rich. $10,000 less wont make them starved to death.

  • @mmcnary: You could flip the thing upside down.

  • People on snowmachines have been doing this for 15 or 20 years. Look up the "hot dogger".

  • and its not april 1st?

  • a just-in-time-for-the-electric-car product.
Actually ive been waiting for this my whole life. the only drawback is getting the burger out after a 3 hour drive home all drunk.

  • How fast would it cook the burger? A good burger should be cooked on relatively high heat to carmelize the sugars in the meat & seal in the juices. If it could cook a good burger, it would overcook one even on days when I don't hit traffic & get home in under 30 minutes.

I agree with the folks who fear it'll fall off and hit another car. Try explaining that to your insurance carrier.

I've heard about the cooking on the engine idea too. I think someone wrote a book about it.

Yep- "Manifold Destiny", it's on Amazon.

  • "no coal, wood, or other fuels are needed" ..except.. Carbon Monoxide. mmm...
