Given that we've covered the topic of real-time 3D animation in 2D video signals before, we must be fairly obsessed with the topic. But placing a 3D CG image into a video signal and manipulating said signal is still, in our book, pretty freakin' cool. Here's a tech demo of 'Installation' by MIT Media Labs. After you are done drooling over their hot camera/display, watch as they place 3D objects into the image and pan around the room. We can't wait until the technology serves its ultimate purpose and Madden places a leaner version of himself on the football field to show "what he would have done" during that last play. [MIT]

I'm not too sure thet's actually working all he way perfectly, its kinda like the objects loose their position. Still, pretty damn cool. That display is awesome.
Its the future, the nerds have to iron out the bugs first. Awesome vid.
Soon they'll have that as glasses and avatars will be walking amongst us! What's more scary is that we won't be able to tell the difference between CG vs. reality in our own dimension. Hope someone is writing this stuff down - movie script idea!
Pr0n...'nuff said.
Makes me want to play Rez in real life. I love the future...
I would love to see a version of this used with the PSP and the camera attachment. Having a living room shooter with augmented reality would marry the interactivity of the Wii with the portability of the PSP.
oooillllllllddddd
"placing a 3D CG image into a video signal and manipulating said signal"
That's um... a very odd way of describing this.
But yeah, this is pretty amazing stuff.
wow, 3D scribble.
The site is obviously a bit vague as to how they've done it- presumably they are creating an internal 3D representation of the room just based on the camera feed, which is a pretty impressive accomplishment. The scribbling part is just for show- this would be tremendously useful in 3D CAD. I could use this today for all kinds of stuff. Imagine an interior designer walking around an empty room with this and dropping furniture into the scene- all without any measuring or modeling.
I'll think it's cool when you can shake it to clear the drawing.
This will revolutionize Hollywood CG.
old news kids
Hey Giz get with the times. This is from 2001! see [acg.media.mit.edu]
@superbad: Exactly what I was thinking about. That'd be pretty sweet.
i thought I saw this on Scientific American Frontiers at least 5 years ago..
Absolutely old stuff...However, both japan and us government have spent millions of our dollars on it. It's still useless at least.
Nice but were are the 3d goggles? That would be even cooler with stereoscopy.
It´s so cool I have NO WORDS for it, I´m just awestruck!
As a connoisseur of everything technically experimental and visually pleasing I just relapsed in a cyclical fit of geekomania that breaks all equanimity into sparse interludes that never sustain proper brain function - translation - this blows my socks off onto the ceiling without the usual propellant.
And yes, I've seen this before, but it still does me dirty.
Was that the same thing I saw years ago or is this something new?
I like Johnny Lee's 3D hookup with the Wiimote/Sensor bar. Check it out on youtube.
wow, way to stay current. I saw this video at least 2 years ago if not longer.
@sniggity:
agreed
@superbad:
agreed as well
I imagine this will be implemented in newer versionions of HDTV or whatever they will call it 3DHDTV. New shows, games and virtual tours , etc. I hope I live long enough to see this as the standard in the modern family home.
[I also wish I saw smart enough to go to MIT and brainstorm with this level of intelligence =( ]
