Arik Hesseldahl of Business Week claims that a source tells him the official iPhone SDK will be delayed by one to three weeks, much like the recent delay in the Apple TV 2.0 upgrade (2 weeks). Apple hasn't made any official statement, but there's only a week left for them to hit their previously-announced "February" release date. To lend credibility to this rumor, Arik points to the fact that Business Week was the first to report on Apple's eventual announcement of the official SDK back in October. [Business Week]

Eh, 2 weeks isn't that much of a difference, right? I mean they did wait so long to release it, so I'm sure a 2 week delay won't make much of a difference to most people. Of course, this is just a rumor.
From what I've been hearing about from engadget, people have gotten so used to their iphone without third party apps that even without the SDK it wouldn't make much difference. And some people with jailbreak are saying they have found they only use very few of the apps. Wonder if that has been true with people here? Has the third party apps on jailbreak proved only limited usefulness so far? Is anyone excited for this anymore?
damn! i've been looking forward to a decent AIM client (and NES emulator maybe) for my iPod touch, my girlfriend wants to be able to do the guitar thing on her iPhone without jailbreaking, and apple better not delay anything now.
As I type this comment on my iPhone, I'm slightly depressed. Still, I can't help but understand, because Apple usually delays to avoid bugs or Vista-like troubles, but I was still hoping for some rare, last-minute event. Oh well...
If you can't wait for the sdk, then go and buy Jason Chen's book.
iPhone SDK Delay: Collapse of Civilization Imminent
@CGrant: Commenter of the century.
@stopcrazypp: Vanilla iPhone, but looking forward to the SDK so I can play without screwing something up.
@stopcrazypp: to tell u the truth i kinda have gotten over the fact of jailbreak. i currently have my iphone jailbreaked but i to use only very few of the apps.. im always looking for new ones and instalign tehm but i hardly ever use them... after a while the joy just leaves but they do come in handy you can do alot of stuff with the jailbreak that u dont notice you do until you restore back to unjailbreaked but also after a while if you stay without a jailbreak u really dont mind at least thats how its been with my experience. and it seems that the jailbreak with games is more to make my friends enjoy my fone instead of me seeing as how they are using the games and not me seeing as im bored of them already
@exterminat25: I agree, It's a very weird thing.. see, I've had a jailbroken iphone since 1.02.. and I was amazed at how many apps there were, how much more you could do, how easy it generally was, and my overall thinking was just why would anyone not jailbreak their phone..
but honestly after a while I was just like, keeping up with what came out.. there weren't a lot of generally really useful apps.. and I only used about 3 or 4 of them on a regular basis.. and what I noticed was that I wasn't keeping up with any of the "standard" iphone features.. I wasn't updating my music, video, photos, bookmarks, etc etc..
I haven't jailbroken my 1.1.3 yet because using ijailbreak it appears that youtube doesn't work.. and honestly the community is getting really messy, and it's just become a bother to go through it all... this is why the sdk is gong to rule.. neat, organized community, mostly proper code (i assume).. and all in one place where it's easy to manage.. also the fact that I can manage it on my computer and not in installer app is a big plus.
I think the absolutely best app that should be made for the iphone, and the one I would pay for, is that one I read about on here so many weeks ago, that allows you to use the camera on it as an option for videochatting with your ichat.. i remember it just being a dropdown option.. and if they could use the mic too.. boy.. that would be so great.
I've been excited about the sdk since last october.. and I hate delays.. but i guess whatever gets it out proper huh..
Fuck my life.
@savager: yeah, but I don't think apple will let apps be free. At least you will have to get an itunes registration to get anything. The problem for me is itunes doesn't work in my country.
@Marty_MacFly: dude just go ask the doctor to lend you the DeLorean to travel to the future.
@Jason Chen: No, the commenter of the century would have posted a link.
For Apple's sake, I hope this is wrong. I have stood by Apple through everything and haven't really faulted them for any of their decisions, but at a time when their stock has bottomed out (more or less), and people are already upset over a mediocre Macworld, it could hurt them. Hopefully they will at least give us information such as pricing, availability, and other details. I'm not condoning a buggy release, though.
@VakeroRokero: So...how do you have an iPhone? Oh, that's right, it's unlocked. Sorry, out of luck.
@drbles: not really, there's this other thing apple sells that works the same way, and uses the same software... ipod touch or something like that... they have featured it here on gizmodo a few times...
It is much more important for Apple to get it right than to get it fast. One month is nothing if you are going to get it right. Think about it and look at what a bad deal BREW or Symbian are. A great iPhone SDK is more important than if it is March 1st or April 5th. We will have to live with this SDK for years to come. We know that the iPhone is a great development platform. All we need is a great SDK.
@altus:
Couldn't have said it better myself.
I got a 32GB Touch last week, I haven't hacked it, and it is wonderful. I am actually enthralled by it; the UI, the responsiveness, the way it has almost replaced my (admittedly aging) iBook.
I would go as far as to say that it is almost the Newton reborn. Calling it an iPod is simply marketing BS. It is a PDA, and with the included apps out of the box, it does almost everything I need. Add Java, and maybe Flash (as much as I hate to admit it), actual Notes synching, and Cut/Paste, and I'm all set.
Chill its only 2 weeks.. maybe less..
"As usual, Apple and their delays! I have never seen Microsoft delaying any product ever more than 1 day! I hate Apple" Your typical air head Microsoft fanboy. :p
Seriously though, "I think" that iPhone's SDK is going to be so limited that creating a calculator might be impossible, they can't give out the main code out yet, and I think that this delay is for security reasons, there is no shipping or manufacturing involved, so it is definitely something about security or stability, which makes feel that for some reason Apple is going to cancel the SDK release, just my feeling nothing more or less.
let us wait and see, and if the iPhone SDK gets will used and some good software pops out, I'm definitely buying the iPhone, otherwise I'm still not convinced.
I use Vista. :p have a good day.
@Biggy:
I think the delays are just more security reasons, I'm sure the people at apple have figured out a way for the sdk to work properly, look at the app installer for example. works great. And i highly doubt they will cancel the sdk kit.
The SDK is absolutely critical to the success of the iPhone. In order to have longevity and compete with Symbian, WMobile & Android, the iPhone must have 3rd apps. So Apple must make the first release as good as possible to not piss people off as they did 12 months ago with the safari kit nonsense. If they get this wrong, they'll just have an expensive phone/ipod player. For it to compete in the PDA space, it must open the doors to 3rd party developers.
i bet you anything it's delayed because they're working on flash for it... apple is not stupid.. and that seems like something that would be a pain in the ass... but shit.. I would love to program flash for the iphone.. but if they try to charge for useless apps.. i will be mad
@rimplestultskin: meebo.com <-- a better than decent AIM client
@JustEaton:
Apple usually delays to avoid bugs? Apple has *many* buggy updates, never mind a recent one that bricked many iPhones, locked and unlocked alike.
I have far less apprehension updating my Windows boxes than I do updating my Apple products.
@easy2panic: what about a good MSN messenger? I have some friends that dont use aim.
@myotheralt: silly me, I didn't look at the link first.
I am running a 1.1.3 iPhone. Kinda waiting on the sdk to come but also getting impatient. I've had my iphone like a month or so and already getting semi-bored with the apps. So my question, would it be worth jailbreaking my phone for a month or bite the bullet and wait for however long it takes for them to release the sdk?
@soggy_cheerio: Commenter of the Century would also have referred to him as "Celebrity Chef, Jason Chen," even when recommending his book about the iPhone.
I for one am waiting for the SDK... As a doc with an iTouch, I can tell you that the iTouch would replace my PDA entirely if 3rd party software companies could make clinical databases for the iTouch (Like Lexi-Comp and epocrates).....
So to say that folks don't care about the SDK because the apps are just not that impressive, doesn't see the bigger picture...
What if it does become a worthy PDA replacement? Won't your business contacts and information get erased if something happens to the battery (has to be replaced by apple cert. techs, right?) I want to believe in you, but just can't put my heart out there to be broken like that. Why do you do these things to me apple? *sob*
i don't understand why apple doesn't just hire more people....it seems like this is a recurring issue
@TonyTriple: It's non-volatile flash memory, so it doesn't have the memory loss problem that used to be common on Palm PDAs (plus you're supposed to be syncing it, right? ;) )
Too bad for you iPhone users.
I'll just keep using the free add-ons for my WinMo phone.
@ savenger:
Dude, I think you hit the nail on its head. Apple and Adobe have been in talks for a while, and I bet they just reached some kind of consensus, so now the SDK needs a little more tweeking. And if that really is the case, Flash is going to be what really opens this up to some really possibilities
@myotheralt: Check it out, it does MSN, AIM, yahoo, and gtalk
I can live with web apps. I can play battleship on my iPhone. Good enough for me. I have a fully JB and unlocked phone and haven't added any app. To it. I haven't found one that's worth the trouble for me. If I want IM I just use mundu im. Same shit.
i love my jailbroken iphone and apps. i love all these douchenozzles that are crying about the sdk. you're still going to have to wait a loonnnngg time till even after the SDK gets released to get any apps. and all of those apps will need to be approved by apple and all of them will cost you money!
Does anyone know if the hacking world has had any luck enableing the iPhone's bluetooth fully? I'd love A2DP. Can that be something that can be enabled with a hack even? I know that all the proper hardware is there. I'd also love a GPS fob to plug into the bottom for real GPS, not the cell tower based location that 1.1.3 brought in. I'm also like better integration of the Calender app with Google Calender. The iPhone mail app works so well with Gmail, why not the Calender?
Anyhow, I love my phone. I've been looking forward to the SDK since before it was announced and just rumor. I can wait a couple more weeks, but I will be going the Jailbreak route if it never materializes, or sucks.
...don't let us down Apple. This phone was originally billed as a programable OS X marvel. I won't trust you again if that doesn't turn out to be the case.
Short of the touch screen, UI, and internal memory..
My x50v actually has decent implementations of a lot of software. I guess the newness of the touch is wearing off and I want to see something new on it. Wheres the Apple spirit now! (in reference to the video about apple users)
@hanspecans: you're still going to have to wait a loonnnngg time till even after the SDK gets released to get any apps. and all of those apps will need to be approved by apple and all of them will cost you money!
You're begging a few questions, but they're the right questions to beg. I want the SDK so I can play with it myself -- much like I can play with creating widgets. If I have to go through an Apple-vetting process just to install my own custom app on my own iPhone, I'm not gonna be a happy camper.
Nor are corporate geeks creating company-specific software for their employees. That's the promise of an SDK, and the promise of the iPhone itself as a platform.
@PhyrePhox: it replaced your iBook? I replaced my iBook with a MacBook. I think the iPod doesn't do what you're asking for, because it's not an iBook... :||
my iPod Touch, I use Mail, Safari, iSolitare and iPhysics... although I would love flash support and I am hoping thet Perian, or VLC does something with it, and Skype, that would be wicked.
Although I was looking forward to the SDK for what seems to be a long time ...a two week delay isn't so bad
@savager: "i bet you anything it's delayed because they're working on flash for it..."
Cash? American? Got a PayPal account? Just what kind of figure are we talkin' here?
