In yet another demonstration of the never-ending hacking possibilities of the ASUS Eee PC laptop, three criminals in Brazil rigged an ATM with the little low cost computer to grab credit card information and personal information numbers to clone cards. Smart, except that one of them was a total moron.
The three men were specialized in cloning credit cards at ATMs, always with the same method. As you can see in the video, the first opens one of the machines, then another one comes to help him with the installation of a black Eee PC. Then they always proceeded to disable the rest of the machines, so clients were forced to use the rigged ATM. All this while they were being recorded by bank security cameras, of course.
The bank manager noticed that the door was forced and all the ATMs were disabled except for one, so he checked the security video and discovered what happened the night before. He immediately alerted the police, who started to search among the usual suspects. It didn't last long: Idiotic Crook Number One went to a police station to denounce a car accident and the three of them—who had a previous criminal history for bank assault in other parts of the country—were aprehended shortly thereafter. Using technology to steal details, but then foiled by a cctv camera, smart, yet oh so stupid
sounds to me like the next superman movie :)
Freshies
Some people simply have NO empathy or perspective......they live for the thrill of the moment
Atta way to represent the EEE community there, dudes. Also, take better care of your system! The EEE's only been out for six months, and yours looks like it's been through a warzone!
Was that their IP address on their ID cards?
Poor little Eee... :(
stupid, dumb criminal masterminds.
Dr. BadVibes at his best!
Damn, busted by the cameras....hold on, so why wasn't John Connor busted the same way when he hacked an ATM with an old HP HPC?
Who knows what evils lurk in the hearts of men?
Spraypaint FTW
If you play the video in reverse the reporter keeps saying "Red room, red room.. John Lennon isn't dead." Kinda weird.
@SpyderMS:
Don't blame yourself.
It fell in with a bad crowd.
I think Pat Boone was in a movie about something like this...the "Eee and the Sidekick" or something...
Gives up his shoes and a Micro SD card in one scene as I recall...
and we would've gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for you meddling kids and your security cameras!
Oh dear goodness that second reporter was hot.
And I love how these criminals come up with some genius plan, just to make a couple of extremely boneheaded moves to screw it all up.
They did this on an episode of CSI.
Also, Brazils major exports are beef and hot women.
ok, so how does that scam work?
like theres actually a port where any pc can connect to an atm using windows softeware??
They found 10 peoples banking information on that laptop, along with 3 gigs of fart porn and "2 girls 1 cup".
@TendoMentis: Actually, that was the DOS 2.11 compatible "Atari Portfolio" computer. Very similar, about the size of a VHS tape when folded.
"the first opens one of the machines, then another one comes to help him with the installation of a black Eee PC. Then they always proceeded to disable the rest of the machines, so clients were forced to use the rigged ATM."
Wait. So you went as far as opening up and disabling the ATM but didn't even make an attempt to get at the ATM money?
To you, Evil, I give thee ingenuity.
To you, Intelligence, I bid thee farewell.
@TendoMentis: John Connor did not hack an ATM with an HP HTC. He hacked it with an Atari Portfolio.

Photographic memory FTW.
@SEARCH ENGINES: I wonder how thrilling their moment is right now :o
I realize that SEARCH ENGINES comment was sarcastic, however, It always amazes me that people who "live for the moment" frequently fail to consider "this moment's" affect on future moments. So it is with these chowder heads. Since they have a criminal history, obviously they still arent associating previous moments with current and future moments.
"In the before, I iz dimb. Nows I are morer smarter"
@TendoMentis: John Connor was being chased around by a T-1000 cop poser, while being protected by Ahnold Roboschnitzel. I don't think the cops had much to go on with all the shenanigans going about.
Get a brain! Morans!
@nutbastard: classic
@iPhony: Beat ya to it! @ 9:56AM
@jabber: The actual cash in an ATM is inside a UL-rated safe in the lower half of the machine. Typically for bank machines like this (a Diebold, I believe), it takes at least an hour to cut into said safe with a cutting torch. Much easier/safer to do what these clowns attempted.
In the days before triple DES security there was an awesomely ballsy scam here in the us. A crew bought a used Fujitsu machine (it was the first one with electronic journaling) and hauled it to a huge mall somewhere (I forgot where), dollied it inside in front of everyone, and just plugged it in. It was not hooked up to the transaction host and (obviously) did not have any cash inside. They rigged the machine to go through the transaction process until the desired info was obtained, whereupon the machine would give an error message to the user. Every few days the thieves would show up, download the EJ files to a floppy and clone the cards.
They eventually got caught, but not before stealing over $100K.
@Brian B:
Now you see, if they had just done it a few times they wouldn't have gotten caught. As usual, it's greed and stupidity that does in the criminal here.
Plug it in, get a day's worth of data, then get it out of there and never come back to that location.
"Every few days" means it was there for quite a while, and it means that the people, mall security, and people familiar with banking practices had more chances to figure out something was amiss.
It's the idiots who keep committing the same crime over and over (and in the same spot!) that get caught the quickest. The smart guys move around a lot and don't use the same trick more than a few times within a given period.
sounds like someone was watching Terminator 2 a little too much
@riqgeez:
Yea, the C.O.Ps put an end to this one quick.
Though they woulda been out of luck if one of the robbers happened to have a freakin Gatling gun in his chest..

fighting crime...in a future time
@mirolator:
they are showing the driver's license wich contains many important information, includin CPF - Cadastro de Pessoa FĂsica.
CPF is a kind of registry of revenue paying. one of the four most important documents in Brazil ( algon with RG [General Registry identity card] Voting Registration and for men Military Service Certificate)
without any of these documents you can't get a job.
some RG (ID) also remember ip address
Nice... I saw the news, but didn't notice it was an EEE PC.
About the security cams... considering the story about the guy who spent 40 hours in an elevator and no one noticed it, these guys could also get away with it.
The news says that they only got caught because of a few coincidences...
The first one is that right after they installed the whole thing, someone from the police went there, noticed that the door was busted (they have electronic locks), added that to the fact that only one of the ATMs was working and then requested the security tape.
If it wasn't for that coincidence, they probably would've succeeded...
