Apparently, Catholicism is full of old people. While that's all well and good, the Pope wants to take his message to the streets, where the young people hang out. He saw on the local news that people use "cellular phones" to send "text messages," so he decided to get on board with this hip and confusing new fad. Now young people can expect to receive texts such as "hey how r u its d pope believe in jesus plz." It's the future of religion!
The texting will take place during World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia in July. The Pope, or at least a collection of his more tech-savvy minions, will send "daily messages of inspiration and hope" to the 225,000 attendees over the five-day festival.
Just be forewarned, if you get one of these messages and respond, the Pope might invite you over to the Vatican to help him figure out his TiVo. [Reuters]

Has the gizmodo staff become retarded?
No, seriously.
Weird....
Weird...
It's not enough that there woefully out of touch, they feel the need to remind us of that fact.
Can't wait for the
"What are you wearing - Pope."
text scandal of 08.
What will he use for texting, the Jesus phone?
And the Lord said, "Text thy nAbourz and be filled with teh h0ly 5pirit"
lol
The pope should get on myspace. that'd be awesome
"Yo what's up dawgs this be the Pope"
he could even have a rap song or something, and sell albums.
POPE: The platinum collection!
dude, I'd be so on that. I wonder if they'll start a text messaging service like
"Text 1 if you'd like information about purchasing your way into heaven, text 2 if you'd like to buy an annulment, text 3 if you want information about becoming a priest/money to get out of jail for pedophilia"...etc
myspace would be sweet though. or a pope facebook.
the pic... I nearly fell of my chair laughing so hard...
So is this at some sort of Godstock festival or is Hitler Youth Pope going to be forcing his beliefs on a bunch of kids that may not want anything to do with him or his religion?
@WCASD: Seriously? Why seriously?
What evidence of retardation do you see on the Gizmodo staff? Because they show such blatant disregard for the fate of their souls? Because they have chosen to possibly offend Catholics? Because Mr. Frucci and Senor Diaz, among others, might not know any Catholics (except, maybe, LIKE THEIR ENTIRE FAMILIES, PERHAPS) and thus don't care? (And if the aforementioned aren't Catholic, sorry, it's just illustrative.)
Are you new here? Seriously?
@GOKOR: I think its just for the people that attend, not everyone.
Now the Bible really is The Holy text.
I wonder what the Pope would Tivo?
@GOKOR: I guess it could be called oktober fest for catholics, but without all the alcohol.
God I love the caption on that picture! Thanks for making me laugh out loud today Giz.
@ps61318:
Sorry, I should phrased it more appropriately:
Screw you Adam Frucci.
Happy now?
*Yawn*
"I used to be 'With it', then they changed what 'It' was. Suddenly what I was 'With' wasn't 'IT' and what was 'It' I found strange and frightening. It'll happen to YOU!!!"
- Abe 'Granpa' Simpson
That pix made my day too.
That's quite a chair Pope Benedict's got there.
@WCASD: Me? I'm delighted. I'm sure you find my lack of faith disturbing as well.
You're genuinely offended. That's unfortunate. But satire sometime has that effect, I guess.
And I'm sure His Holiness has already cancelled his subscription, oh wait, this isn't a subscription service - he'll likely stop coming here. Ok, he's likely had this blocked at the firewall or content filter of the Holy See.
That strange squishy sound is my eyes rolling.
This is fun. I would love to get a text from the pope. Even if it was sent as a mass text spam campaign. How many people can say, 'Yo, my boy the Pope just sent me a text'.
Come to think of it, why would anyone say that?
@FrancesTheMute: Lucy, Daughter of the Devil. [en.wikipedia.org]
I heard he likes to spin with DJ Jesus.
I CAN HAS ABSOLUSHUN?
the text message 'sorry' might be a start
Gives a whole new meaning to firewall.
A new fundie slogan: WWJT.
Sounds like a good way to lure in young, unsuspecting boys to rape.
@jdhuck: Pope sending out a "mass" text - huh, you made an unintentional funny!
Wonder if the Pope's web site ever has Host issues!!! he he!
@ps61318: It was intentional thanks for picking it up.
Not sure about Host issues but I bet they have a Fire and Brimstone Wall.
@rickster434:There would most definitely be alcohol.
@rickster434: It's World Youth Day, not World Catholic Youth Day. In this article there's no mention of religion having a place at the event, just that it's a five day festival.
@ps61318: Your eyes make noise when you roll them? You should see a doctor.
Oh, agnostic here, give me legit proof that there is any religion that is actually right, or for you atheists, prove there is not God. I believe there has got to be something that set it all off, and keeps tabs on whatever it is to keep tabs of, but no one knows anything about any of this shit, and to say they do is foolish.
@rickster434: There is not stated anywhere that Catholics cannot drink alcohol! Most Germans at Oktoberfest are probably Catholics!
@GOKOR: Isn't the pope going to be there? I think that qualifies it as at the very least "quasi-religious".
ps, arguing on the internet is bad
Adam, you are totally going to hell. Probably not just for this..."its d pope believe in jesus plz"
@nachobel: No one's arguing, not that you're wrong. I'm not sure though, would an appearance by Das Pope make it somehow religious? Or would it just make the event something he showed up at?
@GOKOR: It doesn't sound like you're agnostic, it sounds like you're religious, but are half trying to convince yourself otherwise, and haven't the guts to make a choice on the matter.
@jdhuck: I just have to wonder, to keep their computers from getting viruses, do they just enact strict policy, or do they have some sort of Holy Ghosting on their PCs? indulge me here...
Nothing like getting a SMS from a SS.
@GOKOR: I have worked long and diligently to get my eyes to make funny noises when I roll them, sir. Special exercises, and lots of bran. Great at parties.
i prai 4 u ppl
@GOKOR: Religion's needn't be right, but have a message that enough people care about to keep it going. Take Scientology. Wheewwww
@GOKOR: Yeah, because the Pope goes to lots of non-religious things. I'm sure I saw him at the National Rib Cook Off last year.
(Ok, yes, I know, some of them are political, such as his recent visit to the Whitehouse and the UN. But he's always acting in a religious capacity, as the official representative of the Catholic church, and, oh, yeah, as the emobodiment of Jesus on earth. Nothing religious there, move along, citizens.)
@Kaiser-Machead: minus "'"
just another man in a dress
@Sora57: Just so you know, your comment did not go unnoticed. Thanks for the laughs. =)
Time to crank up Ray Stevens singing "Would Jesus Wear a Rolex on his Television Show" and change the lyrics to "Would Ratzner use an iPhone for his txt-2-Jesus show" maybe?
Heathens R Us
@GOKOR: @nachobel:
World Youth Day is a Catholic event. I went in 2002 when it was in Toronto. It was pretty fun and is geared towards Catholic Youth (apparently youth in most countries means people 20-35). It happens every four years and is a pretty huge event. Usually over a million people show up and there are Masses and social functions and even huge service projects.
@GOKOR: "...for you atheists, prove there is not God."
Sorry, can't prove a negative. Please replace logic with a paradigm that accomodates negative proof and we'll get right on it.
iPope
I'm signing up all my friends. I'm guessing they're sent out at Vatican City Time (CET?) so they should arrive around the middle of the night -just when I would want a text reminding me of the importance of chastity.
The previous Pope realized that their were a lot of teens that enjoyed the Catholic religion and wanted the church to be more in touch with the things they liked. World Youth Day was something that he came up with as a way for the Catholic Church to give those teens a way to have unity with the other Catholic teens around the world.
The current Pope is not young by any stretch but he is younger than the previous Pope and does most likely understand the internet as well as texting and things like that. His recent appearances in the U.S. were much more vibrant that the recent visits from the previous Pope.
Isn't the Pope one of the Giz commenters? I'm pretty sure it's the real pope since he has a star by his name.
That fake message nearly made me shit myself in glee!
XD

@hanswatson: Thank you for posting something informative and sensible, to counter some of the, uh, notsosensible, comments that have cropped up on this post.
Also, I'm Catholic, and I didn't find anything about this entry offensive. Some of the comments? Now, those were uncalled for. But there's nothing wrong with a little joking, Adam said nothing unkind or out of line, rather this made me chuckle.
