Do you know where time comes from? Well, for all intents and purposes, it comes from one of the wings of the U.S. Naval Observatory, where the nation’s primary atomic clock (and Joe Biden) live. Joe Biden is not the time master, however.
The time master is actually Dr. Demetrios Matsakis, Chief Scientist for USNO’s Time Services. The Atlantic recently paid Matsakis a visit and made this brief documentary about how America tells time. Among the many interesting thing he explains is the weird fact that, as clocks become more accurate, they’re going to start causing all kinds of problems.
