Not every laptop is bought to edit video. Plenty are bought so that a ten-year-old stops borrowing yours for homework, or so that a grandparent can read email on something larger than a phone. For that kind of job, a basic machine is enough, and one from HP is well below its usual price during Amazon’s Prime Big Deal event, where Prime members can get this 14-inch HP laptop with the Intel N150 for $278, down from a typical price of $499, or 44% less. The offer applies to the silver version.

Built for Homework, Email and Streaming

The processor is Intel’s N150, a four-core chip that reaches 3.6GHz in bursts and is designed for light work: web browsing, documents, video streaming and online classes. HP includes a one-year subscription to Microsoft 365 Personal, which covers Word, Excel and PowerPoint along with cloud storage, so a student can start writing on day one. Microsoft’s Copilot assistant is on board as well. Used within those limits, the laptop does what is asked of it without fuss.

Three points need to be understood before ordering, and I’d rather state them plainly. Memory is 4GB, which means keeping to a handful of browser tabs and one or two apps at a time. The 384GB of storage in the title is made of 128GB inside the laptop plus a 256GB SD card. And the system is Windows 11 Home in S mode, which accepts only apps from the Microsoft Store unless you switch that mode off, a free change that cannot be reversed. None of this is hidden, but it defines who the machine suits.

The screen measures 14 inches with a resolution of 1366 by 768 and an anti-glare finish. At 250 nits, it is comfortable indoors and will struggle on a sunny terrace, and its color range is narrow, so photo editing is not its job. Text, spreadsheets and films are fine. For video calls, HP fits a 720p camera with noise reduction and two microphones, and the speakers are a stereo pair. For a child attending an online lesson or a relative on a family call, that is enough to be seen and heard clearly.

Portability is a real strength. The laptop weighs 3.24 pounds and is 0.71 inches thick, light enough for a school bag, and HP’s fast charging restores about half the battery in 45 minutes. The listing promises long battery life without giving a figure. Connections are generous for the category: one USB-C port that can drive a monitor, two USB-A ports, HDMI, the SD reader and a headphone jack, with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4. Plugging in a printer, a mouse or the living room TV requires no adapter.
