Now that Space Battleship Yamato, the live-action remake of the classic anime series, has crushed the Japanese box office, there’s talk of an American version. Chris McQuarrie, writer of The Usual Suspects and Darren Aronofsky’s The Wolverine, is the screenwriter.
According to Deadline, the Star Blazers film, named for the title of the anime in the United States — would be produced for Paramount by David Ellison, the son of Oracle’s Larry Ellison who produced True Grit.
Severely mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand, McQuarrie might be able to turn the saga of the Yamato’s desperate mission to save humanity into compelling stuff — and we need more space opera on the big screen. On the other hand, do we really need a version of Yamato with all American (read: white) actors? Why don’t we just get a stateside release of the Japanese movie, which looks fantastic? [Deadline]
