This is an image of the sea ice off of east Antarctica’s Princess Astrid Coast. The white wisps of frozen water, a kind of triangle stretching out from the continent, look like the crema on your coffee as they break up to reveal the deep black beneath.
The image was acquired on April 5th, by NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer aboard the Terra satellite. In the top right corner you can see some clouds—easily confused for more ice. For scientific studies, that issue is overcome by using false-color images, but here you’re looking at the natural color image. [NASA]
