Apple’s “spaceship” campus is scheduled to open next year, but it apparently won’t be big enough: The Cupertino company reportedly just signed a lease for a second spaceship. It, too, looks like it’s ready to blast off.
The second spaceship is not an Apple special–it wasn’t designed specifically for the company. The so-called Central and Wolfe campus is being developed by Landmark Investments on the current site of nine buildings built in the 1960s and 70s. However, it’s easy to see why Apple would be interested in the 777,000-square-foot space. Complete with a LEED Platinum certification, the curvaceous complex is big enough for 3,000 employees, and it looks like it came straight out of The Jetsons.
Of course, the new Central and Wolfe campus comes with amenities. There are courtyards, rooftop terraces, an outdoor amphitheater, sports fields, and space for everything from a general store to a barber shop.
There’s also an out-of-view parking garage. The campus is in Sunnyvale, just five miles south of the first spaceship in Cupertino.
The design pictured in these renders was completed by the architecture firm HOK, and it’s possible that Apple will want to modify it. Nevertheless, if the reports from Silicon Valley are correct about Apple finally signing a lease after years of speculation about a third campus, it’s more clear than ever that Apple is growing at an astounding rate. And the company has great taste in architecture.
