At The Shining‘s Hotel, The Scariest Things Are Lurking In The Carpet

The animated short Mite may open with a view of The Shining’s Overlook Hotel, but it quickly dives into that iconic carpet and unveils another, more alien world, where microscopic beings are only indirectly affected by the horrors above.

Walter Volbers spent ten years off and on working on Mite, although he says the animation itself added up to roughly two weeks of eight-hour days. The world running underfoot at the Overlook Hotel may be populated by its own set of beasts, but the short ends on a slightly goofball note. Certainly the microscopic creatures are much more polite than all those humans going mad.
