Great news for fans of M.R. Carey’s The Girl With All the Gifts—a book that’s about to enjoy a higher profile once the movie adaptation is out this fall. Carey announced he’ll be writing another tale set in the same world, with the interesting twist that it’ll be a prequel, rather than the expected sequel.

In a brief video on his official Facebook page, the author shared the good news.

The new book, Carey explains, will begin about 10 years prior to the start of the events in The Girl With All the Gifts—so, it will still be set after the outbreak that has decimated the Earth’s human population:

…While Melanie is growing up in captivity at base Hotel Echo, some other events are playing out which eventually will bring her world to a turning point. It’s a book that can be read completely independently of The Girl With All the Gifts; it has a new cast, it’s a freestanding story. But it picks up on what we already know about Melanie’s world, and I think it opens up a new and unexpected vista on that world.

Carey’s message also included a sincere shout-out to all the readers who’ve supported his books, which also include Fellside. The Facebook post noted that the as-yet-untitled Girl With All the Gifts prequel is due for release in May 2017.
