Some of the early versions of the creatures from the Alien franchise are nearly as frightening as the final version. This isn’t one of them. The proof-of-concept Aliens xenomorph queen was a very rough version of the creature, consisting of black garbage bags over foam.
In this video, Aliens director James Cameron is directing the Stan Winston Studio puppeteers as they test out the full-sized prototype. Two stuntmen were suspended from a crane in order to work the arms. It serves its purpose, offering a rough idea of what the xenomorph would look like, but she doesn’t look like she’s in danger of hurting anything. Fortunately, a lot of painstaking work went into crafting a truly horrifying queen for the actual movie.
