Getting Started With Wix
It’s extremely simple to start with Wix. When you register, you get access to its free website builder. From there, you can immediately build a website or upgrade to the paid version and enjoy all of Wix’s features. By the way, you can also save plenty by using this Wix coupon if you need it.
At the very start, you’ll be asked how you want to build a website.
Wix will let you pick a template and work your way up. Conversely, you can use Wix ADI, an AI site-creator, which makes a website for you based on your answers. However, this ‘kills’ the customization, although you can always pick up where the AI left off and tweak the result to your liking.

Getting Started With Volusion
With Volusion, it’s a bit different.
Once you register, which you can do for free, you’ll see this dashboard:
Click Launch Site Designer, and Volusion will let you design your store immediately. To be frank, the start is a bit rough. You’ll notice no option to pick a pre-built theme. When you click Change Theme, you can notice only the so-called Live Theme. But then, when you try to add a new theme, it’ll be blank.
Volusion does offer some pre-built themes, but you must initiate a free trial or purchase the service. The free version allows you to edit the ‘default’ theme, which we’ll get into later. However, everything is intuitive, and Volusion even has a step-by-step list on how to get you started.
Essentially, it’s a to-do list for building your online store.
One thing we dislike about Volusion is the lack of AI site-building tools. Wix ADI is ingenious, and even Hostinger Website Builder offers some impressive AI craftsmanship. Volusion doesn’t have anything similar.
Easier to Start With: Wix
Wix’s beginner-friendly setup makes it easier to get into. You can start for free, pick from over 800 free templates, and start building a site. Volusion may be a bit confusing for beginners, unless they immediately pay for it and unlock free and premium site themes.
Ecommerce Features
Volusion and Wix are famous for their ecommerce features. The former is primarily an ecommerce platform, while Wix is more of an all-around website builder. This means you can use it to make wedding websites or portfolios, but if you want to sell online, that’s also entirely possible.
Wix’s Ecommerce Experience
We actually run a few online stores made with Wix. They’re going well and performing as expected. We chose Wix for its extensive online store templates and robust ecommerce features, such as:
- Selling up to 50,000 products
- Extensive inventory management
- Dozens of payment gateways
- Product ratings and reviews
- Multi-channel selling
- Customizable shipping (flat-rate, weight-based, free, specific rules, etc.)
- Personalized product pages
- Dropshipping integrations, and more.
Wix’s relatively low transaction fees also ensure its usability for smaller online stores. In a recent Wix vs Shopify comparison, we clarified that Shopify is usually great for larger stores. Meanwhile, Wix Payments, an in-house solution, takes on average 2.9% + $0.30, but this can go up or down depending on the payment vendor.
Another point for Wix is ease of use in terms of populating your online store.
Wix lets you easily add product images and descriptions, and with AI behind you, you can generate witty descriptions for better sales. During our comparison, we enjoyed Wix’s POS and dropshipping integrations, ensuring maximum flexibility for your online sales and more revenue opportunities.
One thing that impressed us was the ability to sell physical or digital goods and services at no extra cost. WooCommerce charges you extra for some of these. Add to this multi-channel selling, and Wix will be phenomenal for selling on social media, Amazon, and other platforms to maximize your earnings.
Volusion’s Ecommerce Experience
Volusion is no less impressive. In fact, we’d say it may be a bit better for larger online stores than Wix. During our Wix vs Volusion comparison, we were constantly impressed by these features:
- Unlimited item selling
- Impressive inventory management (better than Wix!)
- Dropshipping features
- Automatic tax-calculation features
- Inventory tracking
- Multiple product variants
- Customer reviews
- Point of Sale
Volusion offers pretty much everything that Wix does. However, we noticed a bit of a difference in inventory management, which Volusion does a bit better. Features like bulk import or export and automated restocking make Volusion a solid option for large online stores (Wix is better for smaller businesses).
It even supports multi-warehouse management, offering an extensive overview of your products. Volusion’s bulk order processing makes selling more products simpler, while automatic tax calculation ensures your customers always know the exact product price before clicking Buy.
Everything else, from storefront population, product variants, and other ‘standard’ features, is, more or less, identical to Wix. Unfortunately, Volusion lacks that AI ‘nudge’, but you can use another AI tool for product descriptions and images. We haven’t addressed Volusion’s transaction fees.
They’re 0% if you use Stripe-powered Volusion Payments. Use another gateway and you’ll be charged 0.35% to 1.25% based on the subscription plan.
Verdict: Both Are Great for Selling Online
While we love Wix and use it for a few online stores, Volusion may be a bit better for scalability, inventory management for larger stores, and modest transaction fees. On the other hand, Wix is better for storefront design, ease of use, and AI tools for product descriptions and images.
SEO & Marketing Tools: Which One Is More Efficient?

Selling online isn’t about making a cool-looking online store. It’s also about marketing and Search Engine optimization, both of which are vital for persevering in the ever-shifting marketplace.
SEO and Marketing With Wix
Wix packs a punch and offers excellent SEO and marketing features out of the box.
For instance, you can handle your SEO through Wix SEO Wiz, with many advanced tools and an SEO Setup Checklist, which outlines your tasks for SEO improvement. During our testing, we found Wix to be highly customizable, as it allowed us to:
- Edit the Robots.txt file
- Modify markups
- Customize our URLs
- Add custom meta tags
- Personalize our pages shared on social media
- Make mobile-friendly websites (it’s the best mobile site-builder in our tests!)
- Automatically optimize images, and more.
Wix also integrates with third-party CDN providers and SEO tools, including Semrush. Plus, you can use built-in tools like Wix Analytics or Wix Multilingual. The former fetches information from Google Search Console, while the latter lets you effortlessly translate your website for more accessibility.
Marketing tools are no less important. Wix offers a free email marketing tool with sleek, eye-catching templates. It also lets you effortlessly run ad campaigns and advertise on social media with Facebook Ads and Google Ads integration. We nearly forgot Wix Blog, a self-explanatory tool.
It allows you to forge SEO-friendly blogs with unique designs, which you can easily monetize through Google AdSense and merge with an online store to drive more visitors.
SEO and Marketing With Volusion
Volusion isn’t as impressive, but we can’t say we haven’t found it suitable for SEO and marketing.
It offers plenty of integrated SEO tools, such as:
- Robots.txt editor
- URL customization
- Alt text modification
- Mobile-responsive themes
- Canonical tags, and others.
However, Volusion doesn’t offer as many SEO tools as Wix, unless you pick a third-party tool, like Google Search Console or Semrush, for keyword optimization and comprehensive analytics. One feature we like is ROI tracking, which is a result of Volusion’s unrelenting focus on online sales and generating revenue.
Its marketing features are a bit better, and we particularly liked customer reviews and the option to add the deal of the day, which appears immediately and catches your visitor’s attention. Volusion doesn’t have email marketing built in, so again, you have to rely on third-party tools.
We also found Volusion less social media-friendly, with fewer possibilities of connecting to them and extending your reach. It offers basic integration, so to speak, making marketing just a bit harder than Wix. Again, you can use third-party solutions if you don’t mind their sometimes higher costs.
Better for SEO and Marketing: Wix
Wix offers more built-in SEO and marketing tools, and while third-party apps help, they’re often not required to skyrocket your site to success. By the way, Wix’s email marketing is also free! Meanwhile, Volusion mostly relies on third-party apps and lacks many built-in features.
Wix vs Volusion: Templates & Site Themes
Wix is famous for its rich selection of website templates. It offers 800+, although we believe that number is now over 900. In addition, it offers at least 100+ ecommerce-tailored templates, ensuring swift online store creation. Wix’s templates aren’t just ubiquitous: they’re breathtaking!
You’ll find an impressive selection of templates for all purposes, plus, there’s comprehensive filtering, which allows you to find exactly what you want. Simply type in the query, and Wix will dig out something for you. Wix’s templates can be fully transformed, ensuring maximum flexibility
The only downside is that, once you choose the template for your website, you can’t change it. Instead, you have to pick another template and start from scratch. Taking Hostinger Website Builder, we enjoyed that builder for allowing us to change our template for more convenience.
Volusion, however, doesn’t offer many templates. During this Wix vs Volusion comparison, we discovered 45 templates. Some were free, some were under $200 (one-time fee). Its limited selection is far from impressive, especially design-wise. All themes look a bit ‘dull’ in our eyes.
But that’s likely because they’re more ecommerce-oriented and made for practicality, rather than eye-catching aesthetics. On the brighter side, Volusion’s templates are responsive (same as Wix), allowing them to adapt to all screen sizes and orientations.
Better for Templates: Wix
Wix is the absolute winner here, with approximately 18 times more templates that not only look better, but are free. Volusion’s template selection simply pales in comparison, and the fact that they don’t look as modern and sleek doesn’t play in its favor.
Website Building Experience
Wix and Volusion are so-called WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editors. However, during this Wix vs Volusion assessment, we noticed their different design philosophies.
Volusion Website Editor
Volusion isn’t very flexible at first. Its section-based editor allows you to modify, replace, or move sections around, which is convenient. You can edit everything, from fonts and colors to images, styles, text size, and more.
The editor is fairly intuitive. Pick the page you want to edit from the left-side menu, and work on it. Then, you can immediately save changes and preview the page to see how it functions and looks on a desktop or mobile device. However, we can’t help but notice how constrained Volusion’s ‘default’ editor is.
It resembles WordPress, in a way, and doesn’t provide much leeway.
That’s until you realize you can edit CSS and HTML codes if you know what you’re doing. Volusion then becomes limitless and allows you to create unique page elements that will make your online store stand out. Endless possibilities for those who can take advantage of them.
Wix Website Editor
For those who can’t, Wix is the best drag-and-drop site builder they’ll ever find.
Wix allows you to drag and drop your way to the perfect site. Every template can be rearranged from the ground up, with new elements, styles, fonts, buttons, and everything else. We made countless websites with Wix just for fun, and indeed, the process was immensely fun!
It feels like stacking LEGO on top of each other. You don’t have to know a bit about site-building and still make something noteworthy. Plus, there are a handful of AI tools to help you along the way, making everything much less painful. Can you use coding to create unique elements?
Yes! You can embed custom code or use Wix Velo and rely on JavaScript code to implement, let’s say, interactive elements on your websites. By default, however, Wix’s goal is to maximally simplify website creation, while Volusion is more about customization and design freedom.
Beginner-Friendly: Wix, More Customizable: Volusion
If you want a smooth site-building experience with no learning curve, pick Wix. If you appreciate more customization and know your way around coding, Volusion is right for you. There’s no bad choice here. Both editors are fantastic, but each in its own right. So, in a way, this round is a tie.
Apps and Third-Party Integrations
Wix and Volusion allow you to enhance your website or online store through third-party plugins. However, Wix seems to have an edge, with hundreds of plugins in countless different categories.
One glance at Wix’s App Market reveals a vibrant selection of apps for:
- Marketing
- Online sales
- Content creation
- Blogging
- Social media
- SEO, and more
Not all apps are free, but most have lengthy free trials. Additionally, they can be installed with a click, and you can find many user reviews for each plugin, allowing you to filter out the good from the bad. In our testing, we found over 550 applications, but we’re sure Wix expands its roster daily.
Volusion works with many third-party partners. Our comparison revealed roughly 85 picks, perhaps a bit under that. Volusion’s plugins are mostly about ecommerce. This, in turn, means you don’t get many other tools for, let’s say, store translation, content creation, and others.
Result: Wix Has More Apps (Plugins)
Wix trumps Volusion in this round. It offers multiple times more plugins and apps that aren’t necessarily ecommerce-focused. With superior overall variety, Wix’s potential to enhance and upgrade your website is greater. Meanwhile, Volusion is primarily sales-oriented, lacking other aspects in comparison.
Wix vs Volusion: Pricing & Plans
We all love affordable website builders that perform admirably and pack all the essentials for the price. Well, if this wasn’t Wix’s definition, we don’t know what is! All jokes aside, let’s proceed with the Wix vs Volusion comparison and determine upfront and ongoing costs.
Wix
As said, Wix lets you start for free and use this plan forever. We’ll assume you’re a bit more ambitious than that, and if you are, the minimal price you’ll pay is $17 monthly for the Light plan. Honestly, it’s not our favorite, and we’d rather jump to the Core plan at $29 monthly for a year.
The Core plan includes 50 GB of storage, basic marketing and ecommerce tools, and five site collaborators. Each plan, however, offers a free domain for a year and Wix’s reliable hosting, also known as multi-cloud hosting. The Business plan at $36 monthly offers double the storage, more collaborators, and more features.
Wix offers unlimited traffic in all plans, and you get all the security features, no matter how much you spend. The Light plan is excellent for blogging, but if you want to sell online, opt for at least the Core plan. Don’t fret. Wix has an unconditional 14-day money-back guarantee.
You can cancel Wix, get a full refund, and downgrade to the free version in that case.
Volusion
Volusion is pricier and starts at $35 monthly. It offers four plan tiers: Personal, Professional, Business, and Prime. Honestly, the Personal plan is underwhelming for the price, as it offers a single staff account, up to 100 products, and a maximum of $50,000 GMV (Gross Merchandise Volume) per year.
GMV is the amount of payments made in a year, through Volusion’s allowed payment vendors.
If you cross the given threshold, Volusion will automatically upgrade your plan. In this case, it would be Professional, at $79 monthly with a maximum GMV of $100,000 and 5,000 products. We said that Volusion lets you sell unlimited products, but that’s true for Business and Prime plans (at least $299 monthly).
The best value proposition is Business, but it’s very pricey. The first two plans lack the CRM, abandoned cart reports, and other essentials. Volusion cleverly hid them behind the, we must say, insurmountable paywall (for some people). At this price, you can get Shopify (read our review here), which is better than Volusion.
The Winner: Wix
Volusion’s exorbitant pricing makes it affordable only to already established and successful business owners. Meanwhile, Wix, which costs only $29 monthly to sell online, is a great choice for start-ups, enthusiasts, and even more experienced users who want robust features and reliable hosting.
Customer Support
Let’s finally address their customer support, essential for online store maintenance.
Volusion offers live chat and email support in all plans. However, Business and Prime plans have phone support. The latter offers VIP response times if you’re in a rush. Overall, Volusion’s customer support is decent, responsive, and helpful, but far from what we’ve seen in Wix.
For comparison, Wix offers support in 12 languages, including Hebrew, Russian, English, German, and others. Its live chat support is a lot more responsive, while email support works surprisingly quickly. Even phone support via a callback system is impressive, with Wix’s agents getting in touch right away.
Wix has countless community forums and FAQs, and tutorials as part of its knowledge base. On the other hand, Volusion primarily relies on FAQs, which, in our experience, don’t tackle all the intricate questions like Wix does. For the price, we expected a lot more from Volusion.
Better Customer Support: Wix
Wix ultimately snatches this round thanks to multilingual support available through live chat, email, and phone. Wix pairs these support vendors with a comprehensive community forum and a knowledge base, addressing all important questions and potential issues.
Final Recommendations
Wix and Volusion are undoubtedly capable ecommerce website builders, but we ultimately chose Wix.
During our Wix vs Volusion comparison, we realized that Volusion’s ecommerce features and design flexibility are slightly better. If you appreciate scalability and want a website builder for a large business, Volusion is likely a better option. However, you’ll have to spend significantly more.
Wix is a more beginner-friendly option for small and mid-sized businesses, with impressive sales tools, a drag-and-drop site editor, AI tools, low transaction fees, and more affordable prices. To be frank, the rounds that Volusion took weren’t flawless victories. Volusion was only a tad better.
Knowing this, it’s hard to justify paying a considerably larger price for something marginally better. For most people, Wix will tick all the right boxes, and in some instances, even be an overkill! Now that you’re informed of their pros and cons, we believe you can make the right choice.
