In an effort to help get everybody online, Comcast has elected to offer discounted broadband access and even affordable computers to low-income household across the US. Nice job, because it shouldn’t be just higher-ups enjoying Caturday.

The program is being called “Internet Essentials“, and actually comes out of the NBC Universal-Comcast merger from back in 2009. Not that that really takes away from this being a good move. The service will available for families with kids who are eligible to receive free lunches under the National School Lunch Program and who aren’t already Comcast customers. They’ll receive broadband running at 1.5Mbps, which is… well, pretty slow, but nothing to sneeze at, and the option to buy a “netbook-style computer” for $150. Not terrible for getting you started.

Comcast has done pretty good work as an ISP thusfar. And they’re already working with communities in places like Atlanta and Miami to get this initiative off the ground. The more people online, the merrier. [Comcast via Mashable]
