For anyone worried that it’s been several hours since we last heard from valiant pro-physical media warrior and budding crypto entrepreneur Cyberleek, fear not: they’re back. And if you’re wondering whether all the attention of the past few weeks has gone to their alliumal head, consider this: Cyberleek is still referring to themselves in the third person. Readers can draw their own conclusions.
The prolific leaker returned overnight with a new website, a new Grand Theft Auto VI leak, and an update. This, quoth Cyberleek, is the end. If so, they’re going out with a bang: the leak featured footage of the game’s final mission, shorn of context so they wouldn’t risk ruining gamers’ funsies. Cyberleek is also saying that they have footage of the game’s ending, but they’re not going to post it: “[Cyberleek] has the ending. It was considered. It would punish Take-Two greatly – but ruin the experience for the gamers, who did nothing wrong. Take-Two would show CL no mercy – why should CL show any to them? Still: Take-Two was punished enough. The ending stays unpublished.”
Cyberleek: doin’ it for the gamers. Some, however, might suggest that Cyberleek is in fact doing it for the cash. After all, the leaks have coincided with the launch of a memecoin, and all the publicity has driven a whole heap of people toward what would otherwise be just another forgotten slice of the blockchain.
Cyberleek, of course, has no time for such quibblers, calling them godless cynics—or, worse, YouTubers—who don’t understand what Cyberleek is doing for the kids. “The token was only a donation. Never an investment.” Which, I mean, fair: anyone who considers a memecoin linked to an anonymous hacker whose entire public presence involves leaks from a game whose release is a month away an “investment” needs their head examined.
Anyway, it turns out that Cyberleek is disappointed with their flock. The last leak made reference to a secret project for which they were seeking funding: “Cyberleek has a project. Not Rockstar related. Gaming related. It needs expensive hardware. Months to set up. Years to run. Full time.” Well, despite estimates that the coin has allowed Cyberleek to cash out somewhere in the order of $250,000, it seems that this wasn’t enough.
In a sort of pseudo-Kickstarter structure, Cyberleek tied various milestones to the memecoin’s market capitalization, including a release of the entire game if the market cap hit $30m. It… did not. At all. The coin’s market cap is currently sitting at around $1m, which just goes to show that there are only so many people with Pepe avatars you can fleece at any given moment.
But Cyberleek isn’t mad; they’re just disappointed: “The [milestone] was not reached, so no build. Uploading 200+ GB anonymously is a serious risk – worth it only if the milestone funded the secret project. Terms honored as written. Sad.” That’s right: no game for you, and it’s your own fault. I hope you’re happy.
As ever, it’s not clear whether Cyberleek is one person, multiple people, or a state of mind, but the prose in last night’s announcement certainly matched the sort of sub-LinkedIn style of previous posts, with its heavy use of the passive voice and strange, stop-start sentence structure, so it seems reasonable to assume that whoever was behind the previous leaks was also behind this one. Is this the last we’ll hear from them? With over a month until GTA VI launches, that feels unlikely, but we’ll see.
