About Death's Door

Developed by Acid Nerve and edited by Devolver Digital, Death is a Door is a game that takes you directly to Death’s playground and the reapers of souls. This indie game is packed with action and adventure, and a bit of RPG.

You enter the life of a small crow assigned to reap souls. Sounds depressing, perhaps morbid, but strangely enough, it is not drenched in bleakness. It has beauty behind the melancholy, a combination of an isometric art style and handcrafted environments that are not background, but lived in, sporting the same memories.

The game finally comes to life in fights. It is mean, quick, and demands your attention without being harsh. You dash, attack, and cast magic spells over enemies that all appear to have a backstory, whether verbal or not, to be experienced. There’s no map, which feels strange at first, but it encourages you to explore, remember turns, and pay attention. This game doesn’t hold your hand or talk down to you, and the game still does not leave you behind.

Atmosphere and music go in tandem. The soundtrack, composed mostly of piano tones, sometimes speaks louder than the words do. It feels like a subtle conversation, yet deeply affecting.

Why Should I Download Death’s Door?

It’s not the type of game that throws a myriad of features and overstuffed mechanics at you. Death's Door takes a very long time to get your attention and maintain it via the perfect pace. Otherwise, if you are the type of person who does not want fancy things to distract you but still feels that you are immersed in something, this game may suit you.

The game has its story, but it is not going to jump out of the cover and clobber you. It is revealed through the hints, images, little pieces of speech, atmosphere, and during pauses between the bosses. You have to do the connecting yourself; it is gratifying to be so and not have everything done out on a platter. Death’s Door leaves you time to think, to breathe, to wonder what awaits you around the next corner, not only because it is interesting to do so, but because it is silently frightening.

The controls are strict, the sort of which is pleasant as soon as one learns their way. Yeah, you die occasionally, I suppose. However, it seldom seems unfair. Most often, it is not the game, but you. Such candor, such an attitude of, you know, you will get better should you listen, is invigorating. Every time you encounter an upgrade, it is not only a bonus to stats, but also an element of the puzzle, as it becomes an incentive to go back to previous locations and see what you might have overlooked.

The world is sad, by all means, yet warming up in some undecided ways as well. The characters you encounter are strange, sometimes sweet, and at moments, subtly hilarious. It does have some form of charm, which cannot be lost regardless of how far you advance in the story. You become caring about something: the crow, the world, even the souls you are supposed to gather.

It also appears gorgeous. Those are not always the grounds to play a game, but it is quite nice when the graphics are as pretty as they are. Each room, each way, each corner appears to be thought of. That’s impressive in a game that constantly pushes you to move forward. There is also that feeling, one cannot say what it is. It is perhaps nostalgia. Possibly it’s the silent stress. Or maybe it’s the feeling of playing something that knows precisely what it wants to be, and does not strive to be anything but that.

Is Death’s Door Free?

No, it isn't free. Death's Door is a paid game, and it doesn’t feel overpriced or bloated. It is worth the spend on because of the effort poured into making it what it is. It is full of completion and does not feel like something that was constructed to nickel and dime you. No microtransactions, no gambling: the game in full, and not a fake.

What Operating Systems Are Compatible with Death’s Door?

Death's Door can be played on Windows and macOS, and on both, it operates easily, so long as you have the necessary system requirements in terms of hardware. It is also playable on Xbox and PlayStation platforms, in case you are on console. Its performance is not clunky; it is reasonable and optimized, and without unnecessary flash. The game just works. And that is really all that most people are after once they press play.

What Are the Alternatives to Death’s Door?

When you finish playing Death's Door, it is you just want to revisit a similar atmosphere or feel that same eerie awareness; several games can help you feel this way.

The first one that comes to mind is Hollow Knight. It is darker, longer, and immerses deep into the not necessarily welcoming world. You earn your way in through persistence and curiosity. The game is played as a nameless knight that stands on a path across the water-filled and rusty kingdom of Hallownest, full of secrets and grief. The broken pieces contain beauty, and the game has faith in you to detect them. It is also harsher, more intense in fighting and exploration. However, when you persevere, it will be worth it all.

Of course, there is Have a Nice Death. Another taste, although the themes are parallel. In this, you are Death himself, but you have run a corporation that has become a little out of control. It is amusing, satirical, and a little less in terms of tone, and the gameplay is rather keen. The humor slices through the moroseness as it is supposed to be. The art is stunning and knows the right balance between tipping towards the cartoonish without losing any edge. It’s fast-paced and wastes no time throwing you into action, and it is still able to make you care about what is happening.

And Dead Cells, which is, most likely, one of the most fluid yet rewarding action-platformers available. It is procedurally generated; in this way, each run is unique. Hand-to-hand fighting is smooth, receptive, and full of diversity. Although not as story-driven as Death's Door, the atmosphere is as thick, and it feels like a constant, rewarding cycle you’ll want to return to. You want to come back, not because you have to, but because you desire to give re-trying a go, to take a risk, to conquer that one bit that you missed.
