A couple of Harvard mathematicians have created models that suggest there could have been a strange form of natural selection at work on the chemicals swirling in Earth’s primordial soup where life arose. They call what they’ve found “pre-evolution,” and it helps explain why nucleic acids and proteins might have come about, and then later evolved into life as we know it. [via New Scientist]
