“There is no third time,” teases the latest trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero. “Everything ends here.” If you’re hoping for a third Godzilla film from director Takashi Yamazaki, that doesn’t sound great. But if you’re simply hoping the second film could potentially be better than the original, it’s as exciting a statement as one can make.
And, thanks to that new trailer, we see why it might be possible. Godzilla Minus Zero opens in North America on November 6, and in this latest trailer, we see heroes new and old team up to finish what they started. They thought they got Godzilla the last time, but alas, they did not. In fact, the trailer seems to tease that other kaiju might be on the loose as well. Check it out.
In addition to that excellent IMAX transition, this trailer gives us our best look at the film to date. Everyone is scrambling to figure out how to defeat Godzilla one more time, but there’s more to it as well. Blue energy fields. Mysterious lightning. The ominous tease of “This isn’t Godzilla we are talking about.” And don’t forget, an earlier teaser showed New York City. How the heck does that fit in?
The trailer also confirms the addition of a new character named Makoto Aoyama, played by Masami Nagasawa. She’s “a genius weather forecaster assigned to the Disaster Response Bureau,” according to the press release. There’s also confirmation of the return of Akio Itagaki, played by Motosuke Iida. He’s “the Toyo Balloon section chief who made significant contributions to the Godzilla extermination operation.”
All of which seems to be adding up to an emotionally charged epic that, if we’re to believe those taglines, will bring this story of Godzilla to a close.
Godzilla Minus Zero will have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 26, ahead of its Japanese release on November 3 and North American release on November 6. And, yes, it’s the first Japanese movie filmed for IMAX.
