Huge GoPro Hero4 Leak Reveals Silver and Black Edition Features

Yesterday, we shared the information some sleuths on Reddit had been able to pull together about the rumored GoPro Hero4 action camera. Now PetaPixel has a huge scoop revealing what appears to be real official photos of the new camera as well as the features of differing Silver and Black editions of the camera

If we believe PetaPixel's source then it turns out that the Reddit leak was correct that 4K 30 fps video capture and a new touch LCD on the back of the camera are the most important features of the next generation GoPro. What we didn't know is that apparently those features won't be available on the same camera. There will be different Hero4 Black and Silver editions.

The Hero4 Silver will have a touch LCD on the back 4K video at 15fps, 2.7K at 30fps, 1440p at 48fps, 1080p at 60fps, 960p at 100fps, and 720p at 120fps. It takes 12-megapixel stills and is waterproof down to 131 feet. The Black edition is basically the same except that it captures 4K video at up to 30 fps, which is way more useful than 15 fps. The trade off is that you don't get the touch display on the back. It seems the new cameras no longer shoot 240 fps footage.

Still no word on pricing. PetaPixel claims that the cameras will be announced on October 8th, so if it turns out that the new GoPro really is coming, we won't have to wait too much longer to find out. [PetaPixel]

GoPro Hero 4 Rumors: 30 Fps 4K Video Capture and Touch LCD Coming Soon

A thread on Reddit rounds up a bunch of speculation swirling about the GoPro Hero 4, including images of the new action camera that look pretty legitimate. GoPro makes some of the most popular cameras in the world, so we'll definitely see something eventually. At the very least these rumors are a good guess.

The Reddit thread compiles information from a variety of sources including accidentally leaked promotional materials, manuals, and firmware. Though we can't be sure it's all real, there's enough consistency on certain probable upgrades that we'd call them a safe wager.

The key feature upgrade we're seeing is that the Hero 4 will have 4K video capture at 30 fps. Though the Hero 3+ Black had 4K video capture, it only recorded at 15 fps, which is mostly useless. At the standard 30 fps, on the other hand, 4K footage would be a huge boon. Given the rising popularity of 4K video and displays, this would be an important improvement that might entice people to upgrade.

The camera's overall size will reportedly be the same so that it still works with old accessories. Still, there will supposedly be some design changes the most important of which is a new touch LCD on the back of the camera that allows you to monitor your footage. Until now, GoPros have only had a small display on the front, and to monitor the footage, you've had to connect to a separate device.

Leaked photos such as the one above show a few other minor tweaks, like recoding and Wi-Fi indicator lights on the front of the camera.

There's no way to know for sure if this is real until we hear it from the company, but these new features and specs seem pretty plausible. In the past, the company has refreshed its products in the fall so it's possible that we'll see a new Hero soon. GoPro makes our favorite action cameras, so we'll obviously be following with great interest when a refresh does eventually come along. [Reddit]
