In The Martian, the stranded astronaut protagonist spends a lot of the story stuck in a site located in the southern Acidalia Planitia. This is an actual image of that area on Mars, based on the map in the book.

The book follows Mark Watney, stranded on Mars when the rest of his Ares 3 crew evacuate. A film based on the movie, with Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain starring in a movie with a script by Drew Goddard, is set to be released in November of this year. The book describes Acidalia Planitia as an easy drive, which this real photo belies.
I wonder if the movie will go with the book reality or real reality?
