Just when you thought 2016 couldn’t get any more cruel. Debbie Reynolds—a Hollywood star since her teenage leading-lady debut in 1952's Singin’ in the Rain—died just one day after her daughter, Carrie Fisher. She was 84 years old.

Variety reports that the veteran actress was taken to the hospital after suffering an apparent stroke at the home of her son, Todd Fisher. Reynolds and Fisher had an occasionally stormy relationship over the years, which inspired Fisher’s semi-autobiographical book, Postcards from the Edge (made into a 1990 Mike Nichols comedy starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine). But the relationship was clearly a loving and supportive one. As Todd Fisher told Variety today, speaking of his mother’s passing: “She wanted to be with Carrie.”

Hug your loved ones, friends. This has been a rough one.
