Update: The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision reports a Snyder spokesman told them these are horrible lies, like Santa Claus or that Han shot first: "Snyder's spokesperson says: 'While he is super flattered because he is a huge fan, Zack is not involved in any way with the new Star Wars. He is currently in post on his two films, Man of Steel and 300: Battle of Artemisia." That means no Episode VII, VIII or IX, and no offshoot movies, the rep confirms." Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.
Looks like Disney is super-serious about this stand-alone Star Wars movie plan. Vulture says that Zack Snyder, of 300 fame, Watchmen infamy and Man of Steel not-sure-yet-edness, is currently developing a "Star Wars samurai" flick inspired by Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, where seven Jedi help defend a planet from... one of the multitude of Star Wars bad guys, I guess.
This is pretty much the 18 bazillionth Star Wars movie announcement/leak/rumor since Disney announced it was buying Lucasfilm, so what gives? Is Disney really planning on trying to put out one Star Wars flick a year (alternating between official "Episodes" and stand-alone flicks), are they simply getting as many ideas and pitches in as possible to weigh their options, or is it just pure chaos over there? There's no telling. I can tell you this, though — if there is going to be a Star Wars version of Seven Samurai, can we please let Genndy Tartakovsky direct it? Pretty please?
