I second eMusic and also recommend SellaBand ( http://www.sellaband.com ) which lets everyone download the music for free. Artists can join for free and music fans can invest in the recording of an album. When you invest you get a share of the profits and a Limited Edition CD for every $10 part you buy. Until the target has been reached you can get a refund at any time. It has only been around for about 7 months, so it is still growing, but I think it has a lot of potential. SellaBand wants you to download the music for free, so no DRM and no RIAA lawsuits.

Two other sites worth mentioning are:

Magnatune ( http://www.magnatune.com )

Jamendo ( http://www.jamendo.com )

It's good to let artists and music fans know that there are alternatives. If we give these alternatives more publicity, then they might get more popular and then artists don't have to sign with the Big Four when they want to get a lot of publicity. We can support those who are competing with the RIAA member labels.
