Samsung's Gear VR Headset Will Cost $200

How much cash will you need to spend to turn your Samsung Galaxy Note 4 into a bonafide virtual reality headset? Now, we finally know: the Samsung Gear VR will officially cost $200.

There will actually be two versions: the standalone $200 Gear VR headset, and a $250 bundle that comes with Samsung's Bluetooth gamepad. Both ship early December. Either way, you'll also need a Galaxy Note 4 smartphone, so you're looking at one heck of a total sticker price.

Samsung partner Oculus, which announced the price in a blog post, also says you can now download the Oculus Mobile SDK. Which, in case you're not familiar, is the software that developers need to make apps, games, and other VR experiences for the Gear VR and any future VR headsets based on Android. If that describes you, maybe you'll want to go download that, yes?

Which doesn't mean that the Gear VR won't have quite a few experiences to begin with: you can read about some of the best things I saw in the Gear VR right here.

Along with the launch, the company will make the Oculus SDK for Gear VR available, in addition to a couple of canned starter apps for people who want to see what it's all about. And actually some of the stuff sounds pretty fun, including Temple Run VR.

Additionally, once you have a Gear VR, your Note 4 will magically get access to a number of apps you'll need to use your giant phone as a display for virtual reality. These include, from the release:

  • Oculus Home – Your VR home screen and content discovery center, which includes a Samsung section
  • Oculus Store – An application that lets you browse and download new content from the Oculus platform
  • Oculus Cinema – A VR movie theater and cinema where you can watch your favorite movies in an immersive virtual environment
  • Oculus 360 Videos and Photos – Be immersed in 360° videos and panoramas like never before from within Gear VR
