Scientists create system that shows your brain activity in 3D

University of California researchers have created a system that shows how the brain works in real time, allowing users to navigate right inside their own heads and see their neuronal activity firing in three dimensions, showing "real-time source-localized activity from electroencephalographic signals."

They created a high resolution 3D brain model using Magnetic Resonance Imaging, complete with white matter tracts. Then they built an statistical model to "reconstruct the locations and dynamics of multiple sources of activity inside the brain from signals measured at electrodes on the scalp." Then they connected the model to the output from an 64-channel electroencephalographic cap and built an iPad application to let the user navigate the brain:

Each color represents source power and connectivity in a different frequency band (theta, alpha, beta, gamma) and the golden lines are white matter anatomical fiber tracts. Estimated information transfer between brain regions is visualized as pulses of light flowing along the fiber tracts connecting the regions.
