If not for the occasional tire tread marks or glimpses of a wire fence, one could easily mistake Emma Phillips’ photos of a salt mine in Western Australia for images sent back to Earth from a probe on the surface of a distant moon or planet.

Phillips, a Melbourne-based photographer, stumbled upon the abandoned salt mine while she was camping in the desert. She walked through the gates and took all of the photographs in just a few hours. The images, framed to enhance the sense of scale, appear in a self-published book appropriately titled, Salt.
