It’s been a while since Alexandre Aja’s 2019 horror movie Crawl, but it’s time for him and Paramount to get moving onto the next one.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed the next installment’s two leads will be a pair of familiar faces. First, you’ve got Mason Gooding—recently of I Want Your Sex and 72 Hours, and no stranger to the genre, since he’s a Scream alum—and One Piece star Emily Rudd. Like Gooding, she’s no stranger to horror: she was in Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy, and she’ll also be in the underwater thriller Whalefall due in a few months.
Production for Crawl 2 will start later this month in Hungary. The orignal film took place in a Florida home invaded by gators during a hurricane, and this new one’s set in a New York after a similar event hits the Big Apple. Because the first movie made $91 million, Paramount’s been trying to get this sequel off the ground since 2024, with Aja saying at the time that he planned to get on it after the release of his then-upcoming Never Let Go.
Aja’s a busy man, it seems: along with this, he’s to direct Under Paris 2, whose predecessor was a horror-thriller also about an underwater creature terrorizing people. (In that case, it was a shark in the Seine instead of an alligator.) He’s also co-writing the Dead by Daylight movie, which is currently set to be directed by Thordur Palsson.
We’ll have more on Crawl 2 as news emerges.
