In 1966, famed pulp artist Norman Saunders — who illustrated the 1962 Mars Attacks cards — produced a series of magical paintings for Topps’ Batman trading card line.

These illustrations often featured the Caped Crusader and the Boy Wonder being tied up or dolefully getting clobbered by bad guys (such as The Joker, who never painted his ears). Here’s a sampling of this wild artwork — my favorite scene is Robin’s subliminal aircraft.
