The gentle madness of the 1981 DC Superheroes Super Healthy Cookbook

In the July 1981 issue of Woman’s Day, DC Comics engaged in some odd cross-promotional marketing by creating nutrient-packed recipes inspired by their stable of superheroes. The results were predictably deranged.

There’s a lot to love here, from the recipe for making hamburgers with hidden Superman emblems to Robin’s Freudian slip during a French toast recipe to the notion that if you festoon an entire bell pepper with mushrooms and celery, your children will declare junk food verboten.

Also, why hasn’t Grant Morrison rescued the Vegetable Robots from obscurity? And if he’s not up to the task, I’ve got a great Vertigo miniseries pitch for them being recruited as Swamp Thing’s junior deputies. They fight Poison Ivy’s sinister Kale Golem.
