Rocket engines require two important ingredients to fire: fuel, and an oxidizer. And to get the most bang for your buck with those ingredients, you need to find the perfect recipe. As the BBC series Bang Goes the Theory demonstrates with three plastic soda bottles, maxing out on either ingredient doesn’t produce as effective a chemical reaction as ensuring the two are in perfect balance.
