In the short film The Tannery, a fox dies at the end of a hunter’s rifle and becomes a ghost. The first moments of the afterlife are rather sweet, however, at least until the fox’s situation turns horrifying.

In an interview with Directors Notes, director Iain Gardner explains how a friend’s tale his grandmother’s stole spontaneously combusting inspired this story of the animal afterlife. He also insists that the purpose of the film wasn’t to “proselytise people against the fur trade,” although he understands how that’s a common takeaway. He just felt that he was going through a maudlin period creatively, and wanted to bring a heartbreaking childhood thought to life. Still, haunted fur coats may lurk in my dreams for a while.
