By programming a robotic camera to follow a 3D representation of a ballet sequence, director Tarik Abdel-Gawad managed to capture a stunning performance that could scarcely be called mechanical.
Abdel-Gawad created the 3D model by recording the dancers’ performance with motion-capture technology. The data was then used to program a robotic camera that followed a strict set of rules.
The finished product, a film titled “Francesca Da Remini,” is surprisingly effective. The robot’s arm weaves in and out in a seamless, pre-determined manner; there’s no anticipation, merely the instantaneous ebbing and flowing of the camera. In essence, the device became part of the choreography.
