Fighting games are all about signature moves. Every fighter in every game has a few special moves players can execute that are specific to those characters. Devastating, impossible moves that give the characters their own personalities. Fitting those into a satisfying, emotional story, however, can be quite the challenge, which is why we love this new video from Street Fighter so much.
While we’ve seen trailers, toys, and popcorn buckets galore, this latest video cuts straight to the chase. No story. No fuss. Just classic video game footage of your favorite signature Street Fighter moves accompanied by how the new movie will bring them to life. Exactly what a fan of the franchise would need to see to get them into theaters.
You’ve got your fireballs, your sonic booms, your uppercuts, flying kicks, flying heads, and more. It all looks “Perfect!” Though I will say, while most of the classic Street Fighter II characters and moves are represented, they must be saving Blanka (played by Jason Momoa) for the movie. How do you make a video like this and not do his Electric Thunder move? I always loved that one cause it was usually just a button smash, not some elaborate joystick swipe that I could never get right.
And sure, some will watch this clip and be like, “But what’s the story?” Well, the other trailers have hinted at that. “Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury,” the official description reads. “But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don’t, it’s GAME OVER!”
Oh, also, they’re definitely hiding some M. Bison stuff for sure. But that makes sense. He is, after all, an end boss.
Directed by Kitao Sakurai, Street Fighter opens in theaters October 16, and tickets are on sale now.
