This simple optical illusion makes a tree look like it’s floating

A tree in Potsdam, Germany, looks like it has been cut in two, with the top hovering over the trunk, and it’s thanks to a simple but clever artistic technique.

Daniel Siering and Mario Shu wrapped this tree in foil, and then employed trompe-l’œil, a technique that makes painted images appear three-dimensional, when painting on the foil. The video above deliberately ruins the illusion, but the effect of painting the cuts of the trunk and the background behind the tree is particularly wonderful when seen photographed from a particular distance and angle:
