Neill Blomkamp’s new robot movie Chappie is hilarious, like Short Circuit on speed, judging from what we’ve seen so far. But this brand new trailer hints that there’s a serious topic at the heart of the film, and you might want to strap yourself in for some intense emotions.
In Chappie, the police are all replaced by brutal robots, which seems like a pretty topical issue in itself right now — but one of these robots gets upgraded and turned into a thinking, feeling person in its own right, by Dev Patel. And Sigourney Weaver, with her anti-A.I. extremist henchman Hugh Jackman, see this as a threat to the future of humanity. So they want to wipe out this independent consciousness before it gets a chance to grow and survive. Poor Chappie! So it makes more sense now that Chappie has to learn to be kind of a badass, at the hands of rap-rave group Die Antwoord.
This is still looking like one of the year’s most interesting films. Fingers crossed!
