It seems like every other day there is a new dreamy, stupifyingly beautiful timelapse video of some location around the globe. It’s a tried and true form for wowing us internet denizens, but rarely do we get to meet the people behind those thousands of shutter clicks.
The Creators Project recently visited with timelapse photographer Michael Shainblum as he undertook the capturing of California’s scenic landscape. Shainblum explains that you really don’t need a ton of fancy equipment to create beautiful sequences. The essentials can be boiled down to a decent prosumer DSLR, a wide-angle lens, and a tripod.
Of course, to produce the caliber of video coming from Shainblum and those like him usually involves a few more bells and whistles, like the motorized dolly that he lugs through various landscapes. Some serious post-production chops can’t hurt either.
You might say that timelapse photography has grown so popular that it has turned into a formulaic exercise. But it’s clear that people like Shainblum love what they do, and don’t you even try to deny the joy you get from full-screening one of those bad boys and just basking in the scenery.
