Geek extraordinaire and video game nut, Ted Owen, is hoping to get video games into the 2008 summer Olympics as a demonstration sport. Owen is the head of the Global Gaming League. There isn’t much to worry about fellow Olympics lovers. Owen has yet to even contact the International Olympic Committee, he is just claiming that China has his back. Get more details after le jump.
There is a little bit of a catch to the demonstration sport category. Olympic wins in demonstration sports don’t count. They are not recorded, they don’t add to a countries medal count and most importantly people don’t care enough to watch these demonstration sports. There hasn’t been a demonstration sport in the Olympics since 1992. Some of these unique events included roller hockey, military patrol (??), and Korfball.
One of the biggest questions remains, which games would be played? Classic Starcraft battles? Deathmatch in a first-person-shooter? Real time strategy? This entire idea is kind of ridiculous. What next, competitive eating, poker or rock paper scissors in the Olympics?
